Submixes

Buses that survive export, because a bus is just a binding.

Instrument outputs can be wired into submix buses instead of straight into the mix.

Making one

Right-click the canvas for the searchable menu — it offers new instruments, new submixes and bus outputs — or drag an instrument’s output handle onto an existing bus.

What routing changes

  • A routed instrument sounds only through its bus. It is no longer summed into the mix directly, which is the point: one reverb, one compressor, one decision for the group.
  • An instrument whose generator is the bus plays that bus. Effects on that card process the summed signal, so a drum bus with a saturator on it saturates the drums together rather than each hit separately.

What it looks like in the file

A bus is a stack binding:

let drums = stack(
  kick,
  snare,
  hats
)

Which is why submixes survive export and re-import like everything else — there is no struDAWl metadata making them work, just Strudel that happens to be structured.

A worked example

Every bundled song groups its percussion through a drums submix. Open any of them, select the bus card, and watch the raw-code drawer: the effects you add to that card appear on the binding, not on the individual parts.
